This painting depicts the two sons of earth’s first  couple, Adam and Eve. Abel is shown on the left and Cain is depicted on the right. It is evident that Cain is so upset with his brother, that he is about to commit the earth’s first murder. Burning in the background are two sacrifices to God, one from each of the brothers. As you can see, one burns brightly , whereas the other one only smoulders. Could this be the possible reason for the violence ?
Notice the two fires. Whereas the one burns vigorously and the smoke rises straight up to heaven, , the other smoulders, with the smoke actually going sideways. Evidence of Cain’s sacrifice not being pleasing to God. Notice how the sky itself mirrors the violence taking place below. Grey and foreboding.
